1948 : SIXTY YEARS ON. . .
About this page . . .
2008 marks the 60th anniversary of Al Nakba (the catastrophe), as Palestinians refer to the period when Israel was created and Palestine disappeared from the map. To commemorate Al Nakba, the Institute for Palestine Studies has compiled articles from past issues of its flagship Journal of Palestine Studies (see left), and pulled out the carefully constructed maps and chronologies of events from its best-selling books Before Their Diaspora: A Photographic History of the Palestinians 1876–1948 and All That Remains: The Palestinian Villages Occupied and Depopulated by Israel in 1948 (left and below).

Featured Article
Were they expelled or did they flee? And who was responsible? This question has dominated the discourse about the Palestinian Diaspora from 1947 – 1948 until the present. Renowned historian Walid Khalidi wrote a seminal piece in 1961 exposing “Plan Dalet,” a systematic military operation by Zionist forces in April and May 1948 that led to the expulsion of the Palestinians and the creation of the state of Israel. Khalidi’s work served as the basis for subsequent analyses of this issue over two decades later.

The Journal of Palestine Studies was the first publication to carry the English translation of Gamal Abdul Nasser’s memoirs of the 1948 war. The late Egyptian president began to publish his memoirs of this period in an Egyptian weekly in 1955, shortly after a massive Israeli raid on Gaza, which was then under Egyptian administration.
